Amanda & all
I am appauled at what I have been reading regarding the NMC and 3rd part of the register. I was aware of some minor problems but these comments are very significant. As a current OH student studying for the OH degree, it is worrying and frustrating to think that I too may encounter similar issues with registration....
After working hard to get assignments, portfolios etc done, this is the last thing anybody needs!! and then to be told that you have to produce further evidence....well.... I cant say what I am thinking right now!!
What is it all about? whoever said that in other disciplines this would not be tolerated is quite right. We wonder why so many nurses are leaving the profession...examples like this say it all.
I remember re regiserting last year with the NMC and being told that I had to pay the amount in full there and then, otherwise I would not be able to practise. There were no flexi options as "they hadnt come in yet" but " they are planning to introduce annual payments in the future". What a joke!! It was lucky that at that time, but what about thise who cannot??
The NMC are aware of the dis satisfaction of many health professionals, so when are they going to seek to resolve these issues?
Ok, im going now before I explode!!

My Registration is up next year, I cannot afford the proposed fee to
Register & record my other qualifications - why can't there be one
charge for Registration that includes a list of qualifications rather
than different parts of one register??
I've totally given up with the NMC as they are most unhelpful - & this
is what we are supposedly paying an increase for, so called 'quality
service' I think not!

You may not require it to get a job today - but there may come a time
when do. There is also the question of litigation when something goes
wrong. H & S legislation talks about OH nurses and OH professionals -
well it could be argued that if you are not registered as an OH nurse
then you should not be practising as such. I am afraid I want to know
that, should I land up in a court of law, I can demonstrate that I am a
licensed practitioner as well as the fact that I am competent. The law
can be very funny about these things and I don't want to be the first
un-registered OH nurse in the case law history books!

I too have never felt there was any value in paying an extra fee
for something that I have never required to get a job.

I could not agree more. I have never yet had a sensible
conversation with the NMC and I have personally made the decision not to
enroll on the 3rd part of the register as I feel that I don't get value
for money with the current registration fee and I believe they are
increasing it!!

Anne, Bashyr et al,
I am mystified - what other profession in this
world would ever expect, let alone suggest, someone to repeat a
successful degree course? If one has a degree and received the necessary
documentation i.e. the certificate from the relevant university and they
have a record of that event - is that not enough? Can you imagine the
doctors being told they had to repeat their degrees and doing it? What
teacher has ever been sent back to university? etc.etc.
From personal experience with the NMC they don't
know what they are saying on the phone half the time. I rang them up to
ask what post nominals I should use today as an qualified nurse on 3rd
part of the register and was told - it didn't matter I could put what I
like!!!!!!!!!!!!! Loadsacredibility in that - I persisted and said that
was not good enough - this was for publication. In the end I went with
what was said on the back of my reregistration notification letter, but
Bob Dunn told me that was incorrect, so I am none the wiser.
Why do we nurses let these people get away with
it? Other professions would not be dictated to in this way...

Hello Greta
I agree with your sentiments entirely.
There have been a few OHNs who have either not
recorded their OH qualification, or, not checked that the university
with whom they studied had informed the NMC that they had completed
their programme of studies. This would become apparent when checking
their registration details.
Some nurses chose not to pay to record their OH
qualification due to the fee charged by the UKCC/NMC. At the time they
made that decision there were no implications to non-recording. Now
there are serious implications. Such people may be able to submit a
portfolio of evidence to the NMC in order to "set the record straight".
I recommend anyone affected should contact, in the first instance, the
NMC for further advice.
I hope this is helpful
