Dear Jacqui,
Paul is right that the organisation for phyiotherapy in Occupational Health
is ACPOHE. However, you need to decide if you want someone with an
ergonomics degree or occ. health training to provide a full range of
services or if you just want a treatment service.
The evidence at present for physiotherapy is
1. Early treatment is important so you need to consider if you want
self-referral
2. A treatment regime of 4-6 session has been shown by research to offer the
best cost v outcome result.
3. Rehabilitation programmes have been shown to be more effective if
undertaken in the work place rather than outside the workplace
4. If you want an acupuncture treatment provided than the will the therapist
will now have to be registered under an acupuncture council
5. There is no legal need for a patient to be referred to a physiotherapist,
anyone can attend depending on the company's policy
6. Physiotherapist can diagnose, write sick certificates (accepted by DSS +
companies) and provide a range of treatments, including acupuncture but only
for musculo-keletal injuries or in the case of acupuncture for pain relief.
7. An extended range of services can be provided including function
capacity, ergonomic surveys, workplace assessments etc but usually by
someone specialising in occ health not by a local practice.
The H+S has done a draft model of management of musculoskeletal injuries at
work which outlines effective procesess.
If you would like me to provide a list of contacts from ACPOHE than contact
me off list Tel: 0115 9135597
regards,
Catherine

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] service provision
hi all
i am looking at our service provision with a view to further OH expansion.
as i know many of you will have done the sort of things i am looking for
it seems logical to ask.
i have tried a couple of internet searches and not found what i need.
1. has anyone done any evaluation of a smoking cessation in the workplace
either in house or invited from the community. with the liklihood of
legislation next year we are looking at "what should OH do- if anything?
and how much will it cost? and is it worth it? what are the success rates?
etc"
2 does anyone have a "case of need" for a physio in OH and what should we
be looking for in terms of qualifications/skills/appropriate registration
etc and possibly most important...salary (we have had one approach us
asking £70K!) i understand there is a "body" for OH physios who i am
searching for the number of.
is it cheaper to buy the service from a local physio?
and if we employ and they do accupuncture...who "prescribes" it?
(on the subject of prescription...who prescribes the flu vaccine where
there is no OHP?)
3 to the non NHS/government OH nurses....how long do people stay on Long
term absence before their contract is ended...i know this is an "how long
is a piece of string" but i should like to benchmark.
4 are there many OH nurses who want to work 1 or 2 days a week? i am aware
that 3 days is a popular choice.
this is not a tout for CV's or an advert for a job....a simple survey
thanks in anticipation of a cast iron budget proposal for a full time
nurse and full time physio
or a part time nurse and a full time physio and a much higher salary!!
....here's hoping!!
jacqui
