To that point, we are currently working on a large-scale outdoor piece
called "Solar Collector" which, although internet-connected, is powered
by the sun (http://www.solarcollector.ca). It was commissioned (almost
two years ago) for a LEED-certified builing and part of the brief was to
use a specific type of solar power (manufactured by a local company).
This has meant that we are also now bound to a technology that in fact
is not quite ready for prime time, so the sculpture has been delayed.
In terms of Public Art and the relationship between the
client/funder/commissioning body, the technologies or media to be used,
and the artist, this kind of situation may become even more commonplace
as technology-related work is commissioned and certain technologies "du
jour" are hyped...
Just speculation.
