Crisis, Conflict and Disaster Session Announcement
International Association for Impact Assessment
The Impact of Conflict, Disasters and other Extreme Events Impact
Assessments
A workshop on the Impact of the Conflict, Disasters and other Extreme Events
Impact Assessments will be held during IAIA 06, in Stavanger Norway. The
workshop organizers are looking for presentations on the pre or post impact
assessment of any type of extreme event.
The assessment of extreme events has received little attention from the
impact assessment mainstream. However, as Hurricane Katrina demonstrated,
extreme events need to be accurately assessed if the disastrous impacts from
these events are to be avoided. Even when disastrous impacts are accurately
identified, a glaring gap exists in applying what is known to avoid or
minimize a foreseeable disaster. In other words, even a good assessment of
an extreme event may not lead to action to address the negative impacts
identified.
The workshop is looking specifically for presentations on disasters,
conflicts, natural disasters or other non-normal events which discuss how
assessment results could have, or actually did, minimize or avoid the impact
of a disaster.
Up to $500 is available to assist in underwriting the registration cost of
IAIA 06 when making a presentation at the Crisis, Conflict and Disasters
session. Requests for a portion of this fund should be direct to C. Kelly at
