Subject: FAO - Tsunami Forestry website - Coastal protection workshop
Dear Colleagues
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations - Forestry
Department - conducted a workshop recently on coastal protection.
Unfortunately I could not attend.
The workshop is fully reported at the Tsunami Forestry website - Coastal
protection workshop
http://www.fao.org/forestry/site/coastalprotection/en
The website provides valuable insights of great interest to those of us
concerned with disaster reduction on coasts.
Reading the reports it becomes evident that forests have disaster
mitigating effects to varying degrees against different coastal
hazards. Coastal protection using forests has to be integrated into a
broader plan of disaster reduction. My information is that regulations
requiring buildings and housing to be set back anything from 100 to 500
metres in areas under reconstruction after the tsunami of 2004/12/26 are
being totally disregarded in many countries. Implementation of
effective disaster reduction plans is a huge challenge. Even greater in
areas which have escaped recent disasters.
Best regards
