Sandia National Laboratories invites applications for two postdoctoral
positions in Laser Diagnostics at the Combustion Research Facility in
Livermore, CA. Emphasis is placed on understanding the basic physical and
chemical processes underlying particular detection schemes, including
development of models to enable quantitative application of these
diagnostics. One of these positions involves development of noninvasive
optical methods for detection of combustion-generated soot particles.
Techniques currently under consideration include time-resolved laser-
induced incandescence, laser elastic scattering, and extinction. The
second position involves the use of custom-built picosecond lasers for both
time- and frequency-domain investigations of collisions in atmospheric-
pressure gas-phase systems. The successful candidate will be involved in
the development and use of picosecond laser techniques to probe atomic and
molecular energy transfer in gas-phase systems. The experiments will be
closely tied to the development of mechanistic models for energy transfer
involving combustion-relevant species.
The anticipated salary is $70,700.
A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, or related field is required. Candidates are
expected to have a strong publication record and to have a demonstrated
ability to make original scientific contributions. Experience with laser
spectroscopy, light scattering, vacuum systems, laboratory flames, and
scientific programming is desired.
