The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Postdoctoral Scholars
Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invites applicants to apply
for postdoctoral research positions in laboratory studies in chemical
kinetics and photochemistry relevant to the atmospheres of Earth and Mars.
The openings are in the group of Dr. Stanley P. Sander.
The positions will involve planning, executing and analyzing laboratory
experiments on elementary gas phase reactions and UV-visible-IR spectroscopy
of atmospheric trace species. Projects include kinetics, spectroscopy and
photodissociation studies involving HOx, NOx, halogen oxide and organic
species. The successful applicants will carry out these experiments using
techniques such as laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence,
discharge-flow/mass spectroscopy, infrared laser kinetic spectroscopy and
cavity ringdown spectroscopy.
Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. in chemistry, physics or applied
physics with a strong background in experimental research. Experience in
atmospheric physics and/or chemistry is highly desirable. The appointment is
contingent upon evidence of completion of a Ph.D degree. Both positions will
involve close interactions within the JPL/Caltech atmospheric research
communities which includes laboratory, field measurements, satellite and
modeling groups.
The annual starting salary for a recent Ph.D. is approximately US$52,000
and can vary somewhat according to the applicant’s qualifications.
Postdoctoral Scholars positions are awarded for a 1-year period.
Appointments may be renewed in 1-year increments for a maximum of two
additional years. The appointments are expected to begin in the fall/winter
of 2006-2007.
Please send a letter/email describing your research interests, a CV, and a

Caltech and JPL are equal opportunity/affirmative action employers. Women,
minorities, veterans, and disabled persons are encouraged to apply.
