POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN LASER SPECTROSCOPY
AND MUONIUM CHEMISTRY AT UBC
A joint postdoctoral position is available in the area of
experimental laser spectroscopy and reaction dynamics, in the
research groups of Profs. Takamasa Momose and Donald Fleming,
Dept. of Chemistry (http://www.chem.ubc.ca) and TRIUMF
(http://www.triumf.info/public), at the University of British Columbia,
in Vancouver, Canada.
The TRIUMF program involves the use of the muSR technique in
the study of the muonium atom (Mu), a uniquely sensitive H-atom
isotope to quantum mass effects (m_Mu/m_H ~ 1/9) in chemical
reactivity. A current project involves the use of Stimulated Raman
Pumping to produce H2*(v=1), in order to measure the Mu + H2* (v=1)
reaction rate. This experiment will actually be carried out using
the pulsed beam of the RIKEN/RAL facility at the Rutherford Laboratory
in the UK (near Oxford). Other programs in the realm of muonium
chemistry and reaction kinetics utilize the muon beams at the
TRIUMF cyclotron at UBC, in Vancouver.
A related interest in Dr. Momose's laboratory involves the laser
spectroscopy of H2 in the gas, liquid and crystal phases. Both
pulsed and CW high-resolution laser systems will be used. An off-line
experiment on Stimulated Raman Pumping of gaseous H2, to accurately
determine the population of H2*(v=1), will be the first project, but
chemical dynamics of molecules at very low temperatures will also be
conducted.
Experience in laser techniques applied to studies of chemical dynamics
and molecular spectroscopy is important. Salary will be commensurate
with experience, but will not be less than $38,500 (Can)/annum. A
travel allowance is also available. Starting date is flexible but is
expected to be mid-October, with the closing date for applications
mid-Sept., 2006.
Interested parties should send a resume and arrange for three letters
