Laboratory Postdoctoral Position at NASA Ames Research Center
Opportunities exist for a NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) Fellowship in
Laboratory Astrophysics in the Space Science Division at NASA-Ames Research
Center in Mountain View, California. The position is for 2 years (one year
renewable). Candidates with a strong background in physics and/or chemistry
and who are motivated in working on astrophysical problems are invited to
apply.
The research project involves the study of aromatic molecules and ions under
simulated interstellar conditions. Research will examine the spectroscopy of
gas phase aromatic hydrocarbons and clusters generated in a pulsed discharge
nozzle. In particular, this project will examine the electronic spectroscopy
and mass spectrometry of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carbon
nanoparticles and will compare the laboratory data to space- and/or
ground-base astronomical data.
The project involves the use of the Pulsed Discharge Nozzle Cavity Ring Down
Spectrometer (PDN-CRDS) instrument that is available in our laboratory for
the study of interstellar molecule and ion analogs in the gas phase and the
coupling of this instrument with a Reflectron Time-of-Flight Mass
Spectrometer (RETOF-MS).
Strong laboratory experience is required. Experience with laser spectroscopy
(cavity ringdown spectroscopy), jet expansions/molecular beams and vacuum
instrumentation is required for this project. Experience with time-of-flight
mass spectrometry is a plus.
A start date in Summer-Fall 2006 is anticipated, pending NASA funding of the
program.
