Dear all
I have a responsibility for Cancerbackup's interpreting service "Cancer
In Your Language".

I am concerned that much of what the public hears about health service
provision is financially driven, and lacking in awareness. I watched the
BBC report on language service provision, which seemed to focus on
funding, an important issue. However the report lacked balance, and
awareness of why resources are needed. For example the BME community
representative who didn't think translation and interpreting was helpful
mentioned a leaflet on oral issues in the Bangladeshi community. He
obviously lacked awareness about the higher incidence of mouth cancer in
this community.
I also attended a steering group the day after the BBC reports. BME
bilingual workers at the meeting said, they, or colleagues had been
filmed for the report. They were shocked to hear that the report was so
negative. Is this how trusting relationships are built???

Hi All
I would just like to add my views I agree with chris in that when a
person is in hospital it is very scary and then not to understand the
language is even worse. Even when i attend appointments I am nervous as
the medical jargon used is beyound me even I feel I need an interpretor
to expalin the medical termonology used. I think health have to provide
a service that is equal for all and if there is a language barrier they
hav to use interpretors, its the education authorities that have to look
at the way they are working as having englsih classes is a great need
and will continue to be one.
