Nutrition and Nurture in Infancy and Childhood: Bio-Cultural
Perspectives
A three day international, interdisciplinary conference Monday 25th,
Tuesday 26th & Wednesday 27th June 2007
Grange over Sands, Cumbria, England
There is a growing understanding of the complex interactions between
socio-cultural, biological, political and economic influences upon
infant and child feeding, eating and nutrition. This international
interdisciplinary conference is organised by the Maternal and Infant
Nutrition and Nurture Unit (MAINN). MAINN is a multidisciplinary group
within the Women, Infant and Sexual Health Research Unit (WISH), Faculty
of Health, University of Central Lancashire. The conference links
closely with the international journal Maternal and Child Nutrition
(Blackwells) that has its editorial office in MAINN. The conference
will explore key themes from a range of disciplinary perspectives on
infant and child feeding, eating and nutrition.
The conference aims to:
Enhance understanding of the complex interactions between
socio-cultural and biological factors in infant and child feeding,
eating and nutrition.
To explore the nature of the relationship that is engendered between
mother and infant in connection with various types of nutritive and
nurturing behaviour.
To increase understandings of breastfeeding as a biocultural activity.
To focus upon key strategic initiatives that may impact upon practices
related to infant and child feeding, eating and nutrition.
Papers, posters or workshops are invited on any aspect of infant and
child nutrition and feeding practices to include biological, social,
cultural, psychological, political and economic issues.
The scope includes fetal and neonatal nutrition, infant and child
nutrition, feeding and eating, up to and including adolescence.
Thirty minute papers will be presented at concurrent sessions and
posters will be displayed and discussed during designated 20 minute
interactive poster sessions.
Workshops will last up to an hour and are to be facilitated by at least
three people.

Abstract Requirements
Abstracts should be submitted by email (Microsoft Word file preferred)
to [log in to unmask] The subject line of the email should clearly
state "Nutrition & Nurture Conference Abstract". All abstracts will
be viewed by the Conference Review Committee. The abstract must include
the following: · Title · Author/presenter name(s),
institution represented, postal address, email address. Please indicate
who is the primary contact - this will be the person we contact. ·
A 150 word abstract that includes (as appropriate) cont

to be covered, conclusion and implications for practice. ·
Clearly indicate if submitting for paper, poster or workshop. · A
short biography of authors
Please note that all presenters will be required to register for the
conference and pay the fee which will be approximately £300 plus VAT for
the 3 days, non-residential. Daily rate available at £100 plus VAT.
