Subject: ESRC Residential Summer School: Evidence Based Policy Research, 3-7
July 2006
Apologies for cross posting
A Summer School on
Evidence Based Policy Research
to be held at
Kings College, London
3-7 July 2006
This week-long School, supported by the Economic and Social Research
Council, is intended for MPhil/PhD students registered at a UK University
undertaking research on topics relevant to public policy. They may, for
example, be seeking to explore the nature of policy issues or policy
processes, comparing policy over time or between countries, analysing policy
delivery or evaluating the performance of policies. The School will be open
to postgraduates from any discipline, working in any field of public policy.
The School is provided by the ESRC UK Centre for Evidence Based Policy and
Practice at Kings College, London which supports and develops the
contribution of social science to policy and practice. Professor Charlotte
Humphrey, Director of the Centre, will direct the School and colleagues from
the Centre will be tutors. Information on the work of the Centre can be
found on http://www.evidencenetwork.org/.
The School has three aims:
1. to enhance doctoral students' perspectives on how policy is made and
delivered in fields relevant to their research
2. to introduce students to the sources - and the challenges they
represent to researchers - which they will need to access for policy
relevant research
3. to develop students' skills in the methods and techniques appropriate
to undertaking policy relevant research.
Each day's programme will comprise a mix of presentations by course staff,
exercises (including discussion groups and hands on practice with sources
and methods), and seminars with expert outside speakers. Participants will
receive a course pack with reference material for retention. Attached is a
draft timetable in order to see the theme of the summer school and the
timings.
The School will be held at Kings College's campus at Waterloo, Central
London. Residential accommodation will be available on campus in single
en-suite study bedrooms for those who require it. All disability can be
accommodated, and most areas of the campus are accessible, please indicate
when applying if you have any form of disability and we can follow this up
by an assessment of your needs. This prospectus and the course material can
be made available in alternative formats e.g. large print or on disc, if
required.
The School will be free, but participants will need to pay for their own
accommodation, meals and travel. Once offered a place at the School,
participants will be asked to pay a deposit of £100, returnable upon
completion of the School. For an application form email Jane Bailey:
