Dear Colleagues,

I ahve recently taken over MW Advisor/Acting Head of Program job with Aga
Khan University School of Nursing - Afghanistan. For personal reasons I
can only give three months, but would like to enthuse you about the
possibility of taking up the post advertised below!

In AKUSON-AFghanistan we cover both midwifery and nursing preservice
training in Kabul City. The MW curriculum is a competency based one and
has been newly developed with the support of JHPIEGO. It is a time of
rapid change and potentially really positive steps forward are being made
to improve the quality of midwifery and nursing education here.

Soon the Midwifery Advisor post will also be announced. I will also post
this if that is okay.

Thanks so much
from
Kathy Carter-Lee

PS. Applications should go to the address found on the website found below.

developing world.

Aga Khan University School of Nursing (AKUSON)

Established in 1980, AKUSON is the first academic component of the
University. Since its inception, AKUSON has played a pivotal role in
changing public perceptions towards the nursing profession and has
established in Pakistan an internationally acceptable model for nursing
education and practice. At present, AKUSON conducts four academic
programmes: General Nursing (R.N.) Diploma (3 years), B.Sc.N. (4 years),
Post,R.N. B.Sc.N. (2 years) and M.Sc.N (2 years). The School currently
has an enrollment of about 400 students. AKUSON graduates are working in
leadership positions nationally as well as internationally in UK, USA,
Africa etc.

The University invites applications from qualified and highly motivated
professionals for the following position:

Head of AKUSON Programme, based in Kabul, Afghanistan.

AKU is part of Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private
international development agencies which work in the developing countries
of Asia and Africa. Since the signing of the Agreement of Cooperation for
Development with the Interim Administration of Afghanistan by His Highness
the Aga Khan, the AKDN has responded with capacity building and
rehabilitation initiatives in Afghanistan. The AKUSON Programme was
launched in 2002 in Kabul, to support the development of Afghanistan’s
human resources in the health sector by providing institutional building
capacity to the Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) which is responsible
for the education of nurses, midwives and allied health professionals.

Reporting to the Dean, AKUSON, based in Karachi, the Head of the AKUSON
Programme in Kabul, will provide leadership to AKU’s nursing initiative in
Kabul. He or she will establish strong partnerships with international
agencies and organizations in the area of nursing education and services.
The appointee will coordinate with several agencies including donor
agencies, other AKDN institutions and the government of Afghanistan while
participating in policy dialogue and health systems planning and being
involved in human resource development for the health profession in
Afghanistan.

The ideal candidate should be a Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife and
have a Masters or preferably a PhD degree in Nursing/Public Health. He or
she should have experience in curriculum development and academic
administration. The appointee would be dynamic and motivated and able to
operate within resource constraints. Experience in the developing world
will be beneficial. Candidates should know or be willing to learn the
local languages i.e. Persian or Dari.
