Dear Dr Blackman,
I hope you don't mind me writing to you. I am researching a Television
documentary for the History Channel about the final voyage of
Christopher Columbus. We are looking to find an expert in the era on the
diseases that Columbus would have encountered and the diseases that he
would have taken with him to the New World- who might be interested in
considering an interview for the programme. We are looking for someone
who is UK based. Is there a disease expert that you could recommend?
We are looking for a disease expert who can speak about smallpox,
scurvy, illness encountered on boats, malnutrition, reactive arthritis,
and syphilis, that were both Columbus and his crew suffered from and
passed onto the indigenous tribes that they encountered.
But first, perhaps I should tell you a little about the programme.
In particular we will be focusing on Columbus's fourth voyage and the
trials and tribulations that he encountered. Along side this we will be
looking back to his past voyages and furthermore exploring the world
that Christopher Columbus inhabited. This will take the viewer on a
journey of spectacle, splendour and story, using a combination of
interviews with leading historians and experts in cartography, spices,
weaponry and navigation ( to name a few), alongside beautiful shots and
reconstructions
I do hope that the project sounds interesting to you -- and I look
forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Tilly Cowan
