The London section of the Society for Chemical Industry has organised a
lecture to mark the 150th anniversary of the discovery of mauve at Easter
1856 (which fell on 23 March). This has been arranged at very short notice
and we are anxious to get as many people as possible to come.

Tony Travis is deputy director of the Edelstein Center at the Hebrew
University and is the foremost historian of mauveine and the synthetic dye
industry in the world. He is the author of "The Rainbow Makers: The Origins
of the Synthetic Dyestuffs Industry in Western Europe" (1993) -- which
provided much of the factual background for Simon Garfield, "Mauve: How One
Man Invented A Colour That Changed The World" -- and "Dyes Made in America,
1915-1980: The Calco Chemical Company, American Cyanamid and the Raritan
River" (2004). He is currently working on the 1906 celebrations for the
anniversary of mauve and the dye chemist Raphael Meldola. The
lecture is being given on the 150th anniversary of the discovery of mauve at
Easter, 1856 which fell on 23 March!
