The Worlds of Oronce Fine: Mathematics, Instruments, and the Book in Renaissance France
12-14 May 2006
School of Art History, University of St Andrews
Supported by The British Academy, the British Society for the History of Science and The French Book Project (St Andrews)
Oronce Fine is recognised as a seminal figure in the intellectual and cultural life of Renaissance Europe. His teaching in Paris profoundly influenced an entire generation of French mathematicians, while his numerous printed books, often used as textbooks in university curricula, brought him international renown. He made a substantial contribution to the growth in instrumentation, inventing and writing on new mathematical instruments, and was active in the book trade as a designer of title pages, type, and decorations. His engraved maps are widely acknowledged as amongst the finest produced in the period. This conference aims to shed new light on Fine and his worlds, his reception, influence, and legacy.
