Interesting discussion.
There may be a difference, I think, between authors promoting their own
books to an audience they know, an audience that is likely to be
interested in the particular book, and publishers' representatives
sending our promotional material with the usual hyperbole (which the
authors probably find rather embarrassing).
On h-sci-med-tech we do allow book announcements, but we edit them down
to what we perceive to be essential information on the contents of the book.
