in cooperation with the Faculties of Life Sciences, Mathematics,
Philosophy/Education and Physics
The Doctoral Program ("Initiativkolleg"-IK) "Naturwissenschaften im
historischen Kontext/The Sciences in Historical Context" announces the
award of up to 12 doctoral student positions beginning 1 October 2006.
For the first time the University of Vienna offers a Ph.D. program in
this field, to be completed in six semesters. The aims of the program
are: to offer a structured interdisciplinary curriculum in History and
Philosophy of Science with the collaboration of international visitors,
and to make possible the joint supervision of dissertations by
historians/historians of science and natural scientists/mathematicians.
Participation in the study program is required; members of the IK must
therefore reside continuously in Vienna. Participation in the annual
"Vienna International Summer University" in the second half of July is
also part of the program. Positions are funded for three years.
Recipients are employed half time (20 hours/week) at the University of
Vienna; this includes up to 10 hours/week in teaching and research tasks
agreed individually. The total annual salary of 14,000 Euros is paid out
in 14 instalments. Health and social insurance will be covered by the
University. Tuition exemption, additional support for students with
children, and travel funding for research or conferences are included.
Employment requirements: Completed advanced degree
(Magister/Diplom/Master, in exceptional cases a relevant BA/BSc) in
History, History or History and Philosophy of Science, a natural science
or Mathematics.

Application procedure:
The following documents should be submitted as part of an application
for a studentship in the IK "The Sciences in Historical Context":
- A brief cover letter stating the reasons for applying
- Curriculum vitae
- Documentation of previous studies and copies of all university
degrees received
- An expose of the proposed dissertation project (maximum 5 pages)
with bibliography (maximum one page)
- Names of two references (with institutional affiliation and
address)
In addition, a letter of recommendation from one of the named references
(preferably the advisor of the latest degree thesis) should be sent
separately by the deadline date either by Email or post.
Deadline:
Students will be admitted at the beginning of the winter semester (1
October 2006), in exceptional cases at the beginning of the spring
semester (1 March 2007). Admissions will be announced during the first
week of July 2006.
