AHRC Collaborative PhD Studentship
School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and the Science Museum,
London
SOAS and the Science Museum are pleased to announce the award of an
AHRC-funded PhD studentship, to commence from 1 October 2006, in the field
of ASTRONOMY IN 18th- AND 19th-CENTURY INDIA.
The successful candidate will be jointly supervised for a PhD in the
University of London by Professor David Arnold of the History Department at
SOAS and Dr Peter Morris, Head of Research at the Science Museum. The
precise topic for the PhD will be determined in discussion with the student,
but it is expected to focus either on the practice of astronomy in India in
the 18th century (especially in the period of transition to colonial rule
from c. 1740 onwards) or on 'colonial' astronomy especially during the
second half of the 19th century. SOAS and the Science Museum will jointly
provide training and support for the studentship. In addition to pursuing
archival research and preparing a full-length thesis, the candidate will be
expected to help in the development of the Science Museum's Indian astronomy
collection and to make recommendations for its effective display in the new
Science Gallery, due to open in 2009.
Applicants should be UK residents (to qualify for a full studentship) or EU
nationals (tuition fees only). Standard tuition fees and maintenance grants
are paid by the AHRC: in 2006-07 the maintenance payments will be £12,300,
plus a London weighing of £2,000. Applicants should normally have, or expect
soon to be awarded, a Masters degree in EITHER the history of science AND/OR
the history of modern South Asia. Knowledge of a South Asian language, such
as Sanskrit, Persian or Urdu, would be an advantage, but is not essential.
The studentship can be taken up on either a full-time or part-time basis.
Applications should be sent to Professor David Arnold, Department of
History, School of Oriental and African Studies, Thornhaugh Street, Russell
Square, London WC1H 0XG. Candidates should provide a brief c.v., including
date of birth, details of residency status, educational qualifications
(including subject of study and previous source of funding for postgraduate
study), any relevant professional experience, full correspondence details,
and the names of two academic referees.
The closing date for receipt of applications has been extended to 19 May
2006.
The AHRC, SOAS and the Science Museum are committed to a policy of equal
opportunities.
Enquiries concerning the studentship should be directed to David Arnold
([log in to unmask]) or Peter Morris ([log in to unmask]).
