Fixed-term Departmental Lectureship - History of Medicine
Departmental Lecturer: Salary £20,044 - £26,470 pa (under review).
The Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine, which is part of the Faculty of History of the University of Oxford, is seeking to appoint a fixed-term Departmental Lecturer in the History of Medicine from 1 October 2006 to 30 September 2007 to cover the teaching of the Director, Dr Mark Harrison. The successful applicant will hold a doctorate in some aspect of the History of Disease and/or Medicine, or will be very close to completing it.
The principal duty of the successful candidate will be to teach on the MSc/MPhil in the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology, which entails lectures on Methods and Themes in the History of Medicine and the Introduction to the History of Medicine courses. It is also desirable, though not essential, that the candidate be able to teach one of Dr Harrison's two advanced papers for the same degree programme: Medicine and Modern Warfare or Disease, Medicine and Colonialism before 1900.
Applicants should submit three copies each of their CV and a covering letter, outlining their research interests and any relevant teaching experience. These, together with two letters of reference, should be sent directly to Ms Carol Brady, the Administrator of the Wellcome Unit, by the closing date. The closing date for applications is noon on 16 June 2006. Interviews will be held in Oxford on 30 June 2006.
Postdoctoral Research Fellowship - History of Medicine
ACADEMIC-RELATED RESEARCH STAFF GRADE IA: Salary £20,044 - £30,002 pa (subject to review from 1 August 2006 as part of the implementation of the National Framework Agreement for staff in higher education).
The Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine, University of Oxford, is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to develop its programme of research in the history of disease, health and medicine in Europe's former colonies. This programme of research is supported by a Wellcome Trust Strategic Award. In this instance, the Unit requires a Research Fellow to undertake a 3-year project on some aspect of the history of veterinary medicine and/or animal diseases in the former European colonies. The successful candidate will direct his/her own research under the guidance of the Director, Dr Mark Harrison.
Successful applicants will hold a doctorate in the history of disease/medicine, or a relevant area of agrarian history. Preference will be given to applicants who wish to work on an Asian topic or one that has a trans-colonial dimension but candidates wishing to work on other contexts, such as Africa, will be considered. Other desirable skills include relevant vernacular languages and experience of working in archives of the area specified for study.
Applicants should submit three copies of a 2-page proposal, outlining their proposed research and their research to date, together with three copies each of a covering letter and their CV. These and two letters of reference should be sent directly to Ms Carol Brady, the Administrator of the Wellcome Unit, by the closing date. The closing date for applications is noon on 16 June 2006.
