The president of Pakistan has said ahead of a meeting with U.S. President
George Bush that the United States threatened to bomb the country in 2001.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said in an interview to be aired by CBS
News that the Bush administration threatened to bomb Pakistan back to the
stone age if it did not participate in the par in Afghanistan after the
Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, The Guardian reported Friday.
Musharraf told CBS that in 2001: The (Pakistani) intelligence director told
me that (U.S. assistant secretary of state, Richard Armitage) said, 'Be
prepared to be bombed. Be prepared to go back to the stone age.'
The president said he did as the United States requested, but, I think it
was a very rude remark.
Musharraf is scheduled to meet with Bush Friday at the White House to
discuss his country's disagreement with Afghanistan, the Dawn newspaper of
Pakistan reported Friday. Bush is to meet Tuesday with Afghan President
Hamid Karzai and all three leaders are to meet Wednesday.
The disagreement stems from statements from Karzai that terrorism does not
emanate from within Afghanistan, which many have taken to imply terrorism
comes from Pakistan.
