Media History and History in the Media: the Media and Time.
28-30th March 2007, University of Wales Conference Centre, Gregynog,
Newtown Powys.
Following the success of the 2005 Media History and History in the Media
conference, this conference will focus on the relationship between the
media and time.
The relationship of the media to time has been a subject of intense
interest. The media are time bound artefacts which have been created
within specific temporal contexts. The form taken by many media is a
consequence of their time-bound nature. Yet equally, forms of
communication (manuscript, print, electronic) have been instrumental in
representing and ordering time. They have been part of the processes
whereby changing conceptions of time (sacred, daily, historical, and
secular) have been developed and disseminated. From manuscript
circulation, through print (books, serials, magazines, newspapers) to more
modern forms of communication (telegraph, film, radio and TV) the media
have played a decisive part the development of the social experience of
time and in the use of time in societies.
We invite contributions ranging across centuries, focusing on any media
form, on the subject of the relationship between the media and time. We
also invite contributions on the topic of media representations of time.
Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be emailed to Dr. Sian
Nicholas, [log in to unmask], by 15 October 2006.
The conference is organised jointly by Dr. Sian Nicholas, Department of
History and Welsh History, University of Wales Aberystwyth, Professor Tom
O’Malley, Department of Theatre Film and Television, University of Wales
Aberystwyth, Professor K. Williams, University of Wales Swansea, the
Centre for Media History, University of Wales Aberystwyth, and the journal
Media History.
Hanes y Cyfryngau a Hanes yn y Cyfryngau: y Cyfryngau ac Amser.
28-30 Mawrth 2007, Canolfan Gynadledda Prifysgol Cymru, Gregynnog, y
Drenewydd, Powys.
Yn sgil llwyddiant cynhadledd 2005 Hanes y Cyfryngau a Hanes yn y
Cyfryngau, bydd y gynhadledd hon yn canolbwyntio ar y berthynas rhwng y
cyfryngau ac amser.
Mae’r berthynas rhwng y cyfryngau ac amser yn bwnc sydd wedi ennyn cryn
ddiddordeb. Mae’r cyfryngau yn cael eu cyfyngu gan amser ac maent wedi’u
creu o fewn cyd-destunau amserol penodol. Mae ffurfiau llawer o’r cyfyngau
yn deillio o’r ffaith eu bod wedi’u cyfyngu gan amser. Eto, ar yr un pryd,
mae ffurfiau ar gyfathrebu (llawysgrifau, argraffu, ffurfiau electronig)
wedi bod yn hanfodol wrth gynrychioli a rhoi trefn ar amser. Buont yn rhan
o’r broses o ddatblygu a dosbarthu cysyniadau cyfnewidiol am amser
(ysbrydol, bob-dydd, hanesyddol, a secwlar). O gylchredeg llawysgrifau, i
argraffu (llyfrau, cyfresi, cylchgronau, papurau newydd) i ffurfiau mwy
modern ar gyfathrebu (telegraff, ffilm, radio a theledu), mae’r cyfryngau
wedi chwarae rhan dyngedfennol wrth ddatblygu profiad cymdeithasol amser,
ac yn y ffordd y mae cymdeithasau yn defnyddio amser.
Rydym yn gwahodd cyfraniadau sy’n estyn ar draws y canrifoedd, yn
canolbwyntio ar unrhyw ffurf ar y cyfryngau, ar y berthynas rhwng y
cyfryngau ac amser. Rydym hefyd yn gwahodd cyfraniadau ar sut mae’r
cyfryngau yn cynrychioli amser.
Dylid ebostio crynodebau heb fod yn fwy na 300 o eiriau at y Dr Sian
Nicholas, [log in to unmask], erbyn 15 Hydref 2006.
Trefnir y gynhadledd hon ar y cyd gan: y Dr Siân Nicholas, Adran Hanes a
Hanes Cymru, Prifysgol Cymru Aberystwyth; yr Athro Tom O’Malley, Adran
Theatr, Ffilm a Theledu, Prifysgol Cymru Aberystwyth; yr Athro K.
Williams, Prifysgol Cymru Abertawe; Canolfan Hanes y Cyfryngau, Prifysgol
