'Publishing' / Practice
Defining and Disseminating Research by Practice
A conference for postgraduates
and others
To be held at the University of Reading (Whiteknights Campus) on Saturday 13 January 2007
Getting 'published' presents a challenge for postgraduates in any
discipline. How and where do you begin to disseminate your research? What
is the most appropriate format? How does publication relate to career
development? These are questions with which all postgraduates must engage.
For postgraduate students in 'practice-based' disciplines the challenge is
all the greater. What is the relationship between practice and research?
What is the nature of research by practice? How does one disseminate
research by practice? What is the role of traditional, print-based media?
Not only do postgraduates have to cope with the challenge of disseminating
their work for the first time, but they also have to engage with debates
that touch on the very nature of their disciplines.
The aim of this conference, funded by the AHRC Collaborative Research
Training Scheme, will offer a programme designed to help postgraduate
students to engage with the challenge of publishing and disseminating their
research. Plenary sessions will be devoted to discussions about the nature
of 'publishing' in practice-based disciplines and to the challenge faced by
postgraduates as they begin their careers as researchers and practitioners.
In the afternoon the conference will divide into discipline-based groups -
focusing on theatre, film, and fine art - to facilitate discussion of
specific problems and issues raised by the students. Speakers will include
established academics, publishers, curators, and younger academics.
Attendance is free, although you must register in advance. There is a small
number of travel bursaries available to assist students from outside
Reading.
