In case you're interested in European/Italian museums, too:
The Capitoline Museums have finished a project (co-financed by EU) which
contextualizes the museum records, the inventories (present and
historical), the relevant archival documents and the newly written
scientific articles - all stored in various XML dialects (CollectioML,
DocBook, soon TEI/EpiTEI) - using URNs as identification scheme.
This works across institutes and libraries (i.e., across different
servers). FLOSS is used throughout, everything is free.
The relative websites are museicapitolini.net and hyperrecord.net - but
documentation is not yet fully uploaded (mea culpa). I can send them to
you, if it something what you are interested in. But it is more a
distributed network of intelligent museum information systems.
