Touch and value of object handling: AHRC Research Networks Scheme
UCL Museums and Collections have recently received funding from the AHRC
Research Networks Scheme to develop and host a series of workshops
exploring 'Touch and the value of object handling'. The aim of this
project is to bring together museum practitioners, researchers and
clinicians who are interested in exploring the value of object handling,
touch and sensation and in measuring the impact object handling might
have for a variety of emotions, general well-being and in enhancing
knowledge acquisition.
Participants are involved from across the higher education and museum
sectors, bringing together a range of expertise, research interests and
museum access requirements, including: University College Hospitals,
Oxford University, Birmingham University, the British Museum, Museum of
London and National Maritime Museum. The project will offer 5 workshops
plus an end of project conference over the next 12 months exploring:
touch and memory, new technologies for exploring object interpretation,
and the role of object handling with respect to patient recovery time,
amongst other things. At the end of the project the main outcomes of the
project will be collated in an edited volume.
If you are interested in finding out more about this project, either as
a participant in the workshops or simply attending out of interest
