13th June - INTERVIEW SKILLS (www.aslib.com/training/2/06.html)(Afternoon
workshop)
Recruiting new staff and management isn't about taking on someone who
'interviews well'. It's about seeing how they will fit in with the team and
the organisations culture as well as the skills, knowledge, experience and
behaviours that they can bring to that organisation. It's also about
getting the right person who, will not only fill the gap but, will develop
and enhance that job role in the future. If we just replace someone who has
left with a similar person, we stand still - and that means disaster for
the organisation in the long term. This workshop will introduce you to a
structured approach but will also give you the tools to take back to the
workplace and ensure that your selection and recruitment of new employees
is fair, effective and enables you to get it right every time.
Workshop Director: Nicola Wise

14th June - ORGANISING DIGITAL INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE
(www.aslib.com/training/4/22.html)
Organising information and knowledge for effective retrieval is of ever
more importance, with the increasing importance of digital information -
especially the Internet and intranets - and of knowledge management. This
course gives an overview of the most important tools for information
organisation, focusing on metadata formats, and on subject description
tools, especially taxonomies and thesauri. Examples are demonstrated from a
variety of digital environments, and participants have the chance to
design, in outline, a information organisation tool for their own
situation.
Course Director: Dr David Bawden

15th June - NEGOTIATING ONLINE SUBSCRIPTIONS
(www.aslib.com/training/2/08.html) (Morning workshop)
It is tough out there at the moment. We all need to make an impression on
our employers and one way we can achieve this is to save money. It is often
awkward talking about money and this session gives practical guidance on
how to broach the subject with the publisher. This session is aimed at
anyone who has to deal with online resource renewals, new subscriptions or
cancellations. The workshop provides practical tips and strategies you can
really use. Delegates will be able to learn from the experience of the
presenter as well as have the opportunity to discuss their own experiences.
Workshop Director: Fiona Durrant

20th June - ELECTRONIC SERIALS MANAGEMENT
(www.aslib.com/training/4/10.html)
This one-day course will give you an introduction to the theory and
practice of the management of electronic serials and offers the opportunity
to gain an understanding of the rapidly-changing serials environment as
well as an insight into the practical day-to-day management issues relating
to it.
Course Director: Caroline Moss-Gibbons

22nd June - INDEXING: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE
(www.aslib.com/training/4/16.html)
Indexing is one of the best known of 'traditional' library/information
activities. Its importance has not diminished in the digital age. On the
contrary, indexing is of even more importance in digital environments, so
that information can be efficiently found from sources such as the Inter
net, or intranets. Indexing is an important part of the broader process of
metadata creation. Many library/information workers are expected to index
material, but not everyone is given sufficient training. This course covers
general principles of indexing, and the indexing process, and also specific
points of practice, in the indexing of all kinds of material, emphasising
the value of controlled indexing languages. The relations between indexing
and other ways of analysing and denoting content (abstracting, summarising,
classifying, categorising etc.) are emphasised. The course also deals with
understanding, and creating, indexing policies, which govern the way in
which indexing is carried out.
Course Director: Dr David Bawden

27th June - COPYRIGHT FOR INFORMATION PROVIDER: AN INTRODUCTION
(www.aslib.com/training/4/07.html)
Copyright is an increasingly complex problem for information providers. An
awareness of the many pitfalls is vital the efficient management of info
rmation services. Whatever area you work in you will come across copyright
as a live issue and need to understand how to handle the challenges it
poses. At the end of the day you will have a firm understanding of what
problems you may face and be able to alert colleagues to possible problems
and also advise your organisation on how to protect its rights. Please
note: The emphasis will be on UK Copyright Law.
Course Director: Graham Cornish

28th June - COPYRIGHT FOR INFORMATION PROVIDERS: ADVANCED
(www.aslib.com/training/4/26.html)
A basic understanding of copyright highlights just how complex an issue it
is. Knowing how the law works is just the beginning but you need to be able
to map basic concepts new and innovative information delivery systems and
technologies. After this day's training you will have a grater
understanding of how to interpret the law and how to put in place
management systems that take account of the rapidly changing techniques
used for information storage and delivery. Copyright is an issue that will
not go away and a working knowledge of it will be a valuable additional
element in any CV or job. Please note: The emphasis will be on UK Copyright
Law
Course Director: Graham Cornish

29th June - UNDERSTANDING AND ASSESSING INFORMATION NEEDS
(www.aslib.com/training/4/24.html)
Understanding the information needs of users - individuals and groups - is
an absolute necessity of an information worker, or information service, is
to be effective. This course gives both a thorough understanding of the
concepts, and practical skills for understanding and assessing information,
from the immediate needs of a single user needing information (the
'reference interview') to the all-encompassing information needs of a whole
organisation (part of an information management audit).
Course Director: Dr David Bawden

All our courses are available as onsite events. Organisations that train 6
or more staff will save on course fees by having the course onsite. Please
