Dear All
I attach some pics of a binding recently found in a cupboard... The boards
are dated on stylistic grounds c. 1610-1620, northern Europe. The scenes
are: upper board David and Ahimelech and the shew-bread; lower board Moses
and the manna. Since these are both quasi-eucharistic OT scenes, and seem
to come from a Protestant background, I have assumed that they originally
formed part of the binding of a Bible or Service book. BUT I just
wondered if they could possibly be Jewish in origin, given that the scene
with Moses has always (judging by the clasps) been the lower board. Does
anybody know anything about this kind of thing?
The originals will be displayed at a 'once in 10 years' exhibition at
Radley at the beginning of July. Watch this space for details of the
private view. (Or email me if you are going to be in the Oxford area)

Clare Sargent
