CILIP RARE BOOKS GROUP ANNUAL STUDY CONFERENCE.
"Advocates and Entrepreneurs: Demonstrating the value of Special
Collections"
University of Ulster at Coleraine: 6-8 September 2006
Rare Books Group is in the process of changing name to Rare Books and
Special Collections Group, to reflect the variety of materials cared for by
Group members, as voted for in the 2005 AGM.
Those of us who manage Special Collections know how valuable they can be for
learning, teaching, research and other uses, but we need to convince our
various audiences: our users, both actual and potential, and our management,
donors and funders as well. The session "Libraries in Danger" in 2005
illustrated the difficulties that can arise when the value of collections is
not understood.
This conference will help Special Collections librarians and curators to
communicate with their audiences. We will have the opportunity to hear
about examples of good practice in marketing from academic and research
libraries in the UK and Ireland and to discuss a variety of methods of
marketing and promotion in workshops. There will also be a packed social
programme, including visits to Belfast, the Giants' Causeway and more.
