Apologies for cross-posting
In 1835 Charles Winn of Nostell Priory recorded in his diary his offer of “4
shillings a book” for items from his wife’s family library at Boynton Hall.
The following year he recorded “the balance due for my purchases at Boynton:
£166-10-0”. These two seemingly mundane entries disguise the purchase of two
of Nostell’s greatest treasures: the hereditary Strickland coin cabinet and
the associated numismatic library. The contents of Nostell’s iconic
Chippendale medal cabinet, alas, were long ago dispersed, but the ongoing
cataloguing of the library has revealed that the numismatic book collection
survives intact. These remarkable books span the sixteenth to the nineteenth
centuries, and represent the works of all of the key authors, both
metrological and iconographic. In recognition of the completion of the
cataloguing of the numismatic library Nostell will be mounting a small
exhibition on the collection from 1st April. The exhibition is free upon
entry to the house and will run until the 5th November.
