Dear Geoffrey,
George Zeidan and Naguib Mitri founded a press together in 1891, which
continued for a year. A year later they split up, Zeidan kept the press and
called it "Matba`at Al-Hilal", while Metri founded a new press which he
called "Matba`at al-Ma`arif".
The press and its bookshop were located in Al-Fajjalah in Cairo.
In a letter to Al-Arabi newspaper (Jan. 2005), Ahmed Al-Qazzaz, the Marketing
Manager of "Dar Al-Maarif", stated that "Dar Al-Maarif" was founded in 1890.
In a report on translation in the Arab world, Shawki Galal Mohammed of the
Higher Council for Culture (Egypt), states that "Dar al-Ma`arif" was founded
in 1891 by Naguib Mitri.
I hope this information is useful.
Kind regards,
Ahmed Abu Zayed

>Query: Can anyone tell me for certain whether the well-known Egyptian
publisher Dar al-Ma`arif is the successor of Matba`at al-Ma`arif, founded in
1890 by Najib Mitri (according to Sabat)? It seems from catalogue records that
during the 1920s and
>-30s both imprints were in use: does this mean that they were separate and
unconnected? Any information or suggestions would be much appreciated.
