Greetings,
You may be interested in a recent NY Times article, THE DOCTOR'S WORLD; For
Science's Gatekeepers, a Credibility Gap, published 2 May. Unfortunately,
you will have to pay $4 (~£2.50) to view this article because I didn't come
across it until more than 7 days after the publication date (NY Times
articles are free to view for 1 week for registered readers. Registration
is free.). It is accessible via:
http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F20711FD3A5B0C718CDDAC0894DE
404482 From my reading, the NY Times is taking publishers to task for not
being more responsible.
I paid to view the article because it ties together some of the concerns
expressed in
Muir Gray's consultation paper
(http://www.library.nhs.uk/nlhdocs/Bestcurrentevidence.doc) and
a recent speech at the University of Utah by Dr. Donald Lindberg, Director
of the US National Library of Medicine on Access to Truthful and Relevant
Scientific Information at:
http://medstat.med.utah.edu/or/infofair/infofair2006/schedule.php Dr.
Lindberg's speech is free, though you will need RealPlayer to view/listen.
While the beginning of his speech focuses on some of NLM's resources, he
also discusses how publishers and NLM handle fraud in scientific research
and open access initiatives.
Happy Friday,
Pam
