Forgive me if you already know this but I discovered this when preparing a
Medline filters tutorial:
Unlike the other Pub Med Clinical Queries features which appear to use a
string of keywords, the filter for systematic reviews is operationalised as
an actual subset (systematic[sb]).
What this means in practice is that if you do ANY Pubmed search (for example
in the standard interface) you can add "AND systematic[sb]" to restrict to
systematic review type materials. (I had previously believed that you had to
choose to either do a quick and dirty in the Clinical Queries option or to
do a more extended search in the standard interface and then use your own
filter words).
Obviously this tip carries two cautions:
1. Pubmed uses a very loose (i.e. sensitive) definition of what goes into
this set (e.g. it includes consensus statements!!)
2. As with any shortcut it requires further evaluation.
However it could be particularly useful at the "scoping stage" where you
want an overall snapshot of what evidence is already out there.
That will teach me to read "Help" more often!
