Today sees the launch of Tobacco Information Scotland (TIS). TIS is a
gateway to relevant and up-to-date information on tobacco that will help
health professionals, journalists, academics and the general public. This
new service has been created by ASH Scotland, Scotland’s leading voluntary
organisation for tobacco control. TIS can be accessed at
http://www.tobaccoinscotland.org.uk/
Scotland is due to go smoke-free in enclosed public places on March 26th.
This marks the latest step in the fight to reduce the disease, disability
and death tobacco causes in Scotland every year. TIS has a role in this
fight, ensuring that the information used to make policy and inform the
public is as accurate and up-to-date as possible.
TIS is funded by the British Heart Foundation, and has been created by
working with partners such NHS Health Scotland, NHS Scotland e-library, the
BMA’s Tobacco Control Research Centre, Information Services Division
Scotland and the Cancer Research UK Centre for Tobacco Control Research.
ASH Scotland has developed TIS to provide the best possible gateway to
tobacco related information in Scotland.
TIS content is selected by subject specialists in tobacco control and is
described, indexed and organised by qualified information professionals.
TIS is designed in such a way to make navigation straight-forward and
seamless. If you are looking for Scottish tobacco-related statistics,
guidelines, policies and health promotion materials, TIS is the ideal
starting point.
Maureen Moore, Chief Executive of ASH Scotland said,
“The best tool for understanding tobacco and the harm it causes is accurate
in-depth information. The launch of Tobacco Information Scotland creates a
new generation of such tools using information technology and will help us
understand the effects of tobacco in Scotland and how to combat it at a
much more profound level.”
Iain Lowis, Director of the British Heart Foundation in Scotland said,
“The comprehensive, accurate and up to date information contained in the
Tobacco Information Scotland website provides an important, necessary and
valuable ‘one stop shop’ for all those who have a professional or personal
interest in understanding and targeting smoking in Scotland. Smoking is one
of the major causes of heart disease and 70% of smokers want to give up,
and we hope this resource will help them too”.
