Dear all
Thank you for all your responses to this query, I've had some really
useful replies which I will summarise for those interested.
Most suggested a shelving test of some sort which we have considered.
Other suggestions included:
* Angry customer scenario
* Test using the catalogue - i.e. finding titles and writing
down the shelf mark
* A dummy reading list that candidates have to find on the
shelves - some with wrong page numbers or books with several editions so
they have to check carefully
* Creating catalogue entries
* Sorting card catalogues
* Using any equipment that the job involves
* Writing a letter to a user enquiring about information
resources
* Finding items on the shelves and answering questions about
them - e.g. how many copies does the library have?
* Role play exercise
* Spelling tests
There were some useful comments about having a colleague observe the
candidate while they carried out the test as the approach taken is often
more important than how well the task was completed.
We will certainly be using some of these suggestions. Thanks again for
all your contributions.
