LIS-LINK Comrades!
Here is a summary of folks responses to my question about the relevance of
Google Scholar.
* Most respondents thought that mention should be made of Google and
Google Scholar, but with the expected caveats about the WWW and
support in the form of some training in evaluating the material found on
Google or other search engines
* One respondent pointed out that Google Scholar is a Godsend to small
poorly-resourced college libraries
* Two respondents pointed out that Google and Scholar are tempting
because their basic screens are simple and inviting, echoing a colleague's
comment a few years ago that their ILS's OPAC 'really needs to look
more like Google' - a view with which I have much sympathy
So, yes, I will show students Google Scholar and Google, showing them how
to use these search engines effectively and how to evaluate material that
they find. I promise...
