Seminar: Plagiarism and Piracy: copyright infringement in an online world
Wednesday 10 May, London (0945-1245)

Chair: Chris Beckett, Scholarly Information Strategies
On the Internet the understanding of, and adherence to, copyright can no
longer be assumed and both editors and publishers need to ensure the
protection of their content from plagiarism and illegal re-use. What is the
scale of the problem, and what are the experiences of publishers and editors
throughout the academic community? This seminar will present perspectives
from the editors and publishers, providing information on initiatives in
place from bodies such as COPE and the Publishers' Association, and will
also provide an overview of the legal framework within which scholarly
publishing exists.
Student behaviour is frequently overlooked by the research publishing
community, but their understanding and acceptance of copyright will directly
impact on scholarly publishing in the future. With this in mind, the seminar
also presents information on their use of content and the technical
solutions used to ensure compliance with copyright.
Following the presentations there will be time for discussion about what
more can be done to protect content.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: rights managers, publishing managers and editorial
managers who share an interest in how their content may be mis-used and
would like to find out what they can do about this
