Just to say that at the University of Worcester we send out library reminders
by both email and post - the students get the choice. The emails warn them
the day before items become overdue. We use TALIS and it does automatically
record the date notices are sent on the student's record. We do sometimes
have blips with emails in general if the network is down for any reason but
we make allowances on the fines when we know this has happened. We don't take
any responsibility for non arrival of reminders though. The students can
arrange their own email forwarding from their university one to a personal
address but they can pick up their university email from Netmail on their
student home web page. The only downside to all this is that they have come
to rely on reminders so much that, if for any reason, reminders don't arrive
the students forget to renew their books despite the fact that they are date
stamped or have a receipt if self issued. We often find ourselves having to
remind students that the reminders are only a courtesy.
