Health Information Services Management (HISM)

HISM is an innovative course that has been developed in partnership by the University of Central England and Macmillan Cancer Support (formerly Macmillan Cancer Relief). It is a flexible entry MSc postgraduate double module* designed for people seeking to provide information services within a health environment.

The course focus is on providing effective information services to support the patient and those affected by illness. You will develop your understanding of the role of information in the patient's journey and will study such areas as:
*	Resource selection, appraisal and evidence-based health care
*	Managing and organising information
*	Service monitoring, evaluation and development
*	Communicating information effectively.

The course also explores the sensitive communication issues associated with helping people to cope with the consequences of the information they receive.

Course structure
Learning is through a mixture of taught sessions and working at a distance. Students will meet together over one academic year on 4 Fridays/Saturdays during the programme. Students are also encouraged to visit health information services between the 4 events.

The dates for the two-day sessions in 2006/2007 are:
Event 1  Friday 13 - Saturday 14 October 2006
Event 2  Friday 24 - Saturday 25 November 2006
Event 3  Friday 26 - Saturday 27 January 2007
Event 4  Friday 30 - Saturday 31 March 2007

Upon successful completion of the course, students will gain 30 Masters level credits.

Entry requirements
Ideally, applicants should have successfully completed an undergraduate degree and have some appropriate experience in information work. However, we encourage applications from individuals with other qualifications and experience. We are also happy to discuss an application with highly motivated individuals who feel that they could benefit from undertaking this course.

Fees
The fees for the full course for 2006-07 are £540.

What our past students have said

		Has definitely been interesting and motivating and resulted in me asking more questions - looking at the bigger picture, looking at other ways of working etc.

		Each and every session raised questions that I was eager to find answers to. I felt the content was very interesting and stimulating and that I learned a tremendous amount.

		This has been an unforgettable experience in terms of the knowledge gained, relationships formed and on a more personal level, expanding my awareness of other career opportunities in the information field.

		A somewhat unexpected bonus was the networking aspect of this course. I found the opportunity to meet other health information professionals very valuable and intend to maintain the links formed.

		The teaching styles of individual lecturers contributed most to my enjoyment of the learning and the events. I've been stunned by their motivation to research and deliver such a comprehensive programme.

		I have in effect been provided with a wealth of resources I feel will prove useful for years to come.
