Winner of the CILIP/Online Information Personal Development Award feted at International Information Industry Awards
CILIP is delighted to announce that this year's winner of the CILIP/Online Information Personal Development Award is Stella Wisdom. She received her award from CILIP's President Martin Molloy at a Gala Dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, co-hosted by Online Information and Information World Review to celebrate the International Information Industry Awards for 2006.
The award gives newly Chartered members the opportunity to explain how they have used, or are intending to use, their Chartered status in planning for their futures and to demonstrate they have added value to their organisations. Becoming Chartered is not the end of the story: increasingly it is the starting point for a career-long commitment to personal development.
Stella started her professional career in the National Library of Scotland before moving to her present post as Project Manager Collection Storage North for the British Library at Boston Spa, in February 2006. Although daunted by the promotion, Stella knew she wanted challenging opportunities to apply and develop transferable skills which had developed during her Chartership training at NLS and as she says, "I haven't looked back!" In her winning application she goes on to say, "My Chartership year gave me the motivation and opportunity to investigate wider issues, which are affecting the library and information profession. I enjoyed working with colleagues from other departments in the library and I valued the sense of strategic overview I was gaining about the organisation". Stella also recognises that Chartership is the first step to developing further challenges.
All members of CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals who achieved their Chartership between October 2005 and September 2006 were entitled to enter for the Award. To compete, candidates had to write a statement of not more than 500 words explaining how gaining their professional qualification had helped with their continuing professional development. Entries were judged by a panel consisting of Margaret Oldroyd (Chair of CILIP's Chartership Board), Katherine Allen of VNU Exhibitions Europe (which runs the Online Information Conference and Exhibition) and Tim Buckley Owen, Consultant.
Judges' comments:
'Stella demonstrated how she had seized opportunities resulting from her Chartership activity to develop her personal skills, benefit the libraries for which she has worked and progress her own career in exciting ways.'
