EnIL (EUROPEAN NETWORK ON INFORMATION LITERACY)
http://www.ceris.to.cnr.it/Basili/EnIL/index.html
is a research initiative started in 2001 by Carla
Basili within the Italian National Research
Council.
The idea of opening a European discourse on
Information Literacy originated from the evident
absence in 2001 of a "European voice" in the IL
debate (see article C.BASILI. Information
literacy: a USA-only concept?, AIDAinformazioni,
19 (2001), n. 2.)
EnIL RESULTS TO DATE (September 2006)
a) The network of experts. The first nucleus of
the network is composed of experts from research
and academic institutions from: Austria, Belgium,
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic,
Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and The
Netherlands. The network has to be further
enlarged to other European countries.
The range of competencies spans from researchers
in Information & Documentation field to
librarians. The network still shows a lack of
researchers in the fields of Education, life-long
learning and e-learning.
b) The first EnIL report. In June 2003 the
Italian National Research Council published a
volume on the state of the art of IL in Europe,
with papers from each of the EnIL experts.
Information Literacy in Europe: a first insight
into the state of the art of Information Literacy
in the European Union, Carla BASILI (ed.). Rome:
Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, 2003, 315 pp.
c) The European Observatory on IL Policies and Research, available at:
http://www.ceris.cnr.it/Basili/EnIL/gateway/gatewayhome.htm
is an online gateway (EgIL) to European policies,
research projects and initiatives related to
information literacy, with special focus on
Higher Education developments.
The gateway is organised on a country base and
has been released for Austria, Denmark, Finland,
Germany, Italy, Poland. Work for other European
countries is still in progress.
EnIL CURRENT ACTIVITIES: CALL FOR COLLABORATION
ACTION LINE 1: Development of an assessment and
certification system of IL competencies,
including the experimentation of a European
Information Driving Licence (EiDL), analogous to
the European Computer Driving License (EcDL).
A survey (EDInfo) on information competencies of
students to strengthen campus awareness of the
need for information literacy and propose a
systematic data gathering about the information
competencies of incoming students in Higher
Education. The pilot project involved the Libera
Università Maria SS. Assunta (LUMSA) in Rome. The
2005 survey involved a set of universities in
Austria, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Italy and
Sweden. The 2006 survey is in progress.
The questionnaire has been translated by EnIL
members into 12 EU languages and the different
versions are available at EnIL questionnaire
translations
http://www.ceris.cnr.it/Basili/EnIL/questionnaire.html.
The output of the survey is a Europe-wide
collection of comparable data to be analysed for
future common actions. WOULD YOU LIKE TO
PARTICIPATE IN THE ENIL SURVEY, please contact
Carla Basili at [log in to unmask]
ACTION LINE 2: Expansion of the European
Observatory on IL Policies and Research
IF YOU WANT TO INSERT AN IL INITIATIVE of your
country into the gateway, please fill out the web
form at

ACTION LINE 3: Management of the EnIL network
and its enlargement to all the 25 EU Member
States, Norway, Switzerland and East Europe
Countries.
The network is open to any contribution from the European IL community.
