Wiley Announces Significant Increases in its Journal Impact
Factors
Hoboken, N.J., July 31, 2006 – Global publisher John Wiley &
Sons, Inc., announced today significant increases in Impact
Factors for its journals across the majority of subject
areas, according to the Thomson ISI® 2005 Journal Citation
Reports.
Impact Factors reflect the frequency that peer-reviewed
journals are cited by researchers, making them a vital tool
for evaluating a journal’s influence.
Globally, 65% of Wiley journals included in the Journal
Citation Report’s Science Edition increased their Impact
Factors. Furthermore, 58% of the Wiley journals included in
the Social Science Edition increased their Impact Factors,
with a 12.7% increase in 2005 versus 2004.
Highlights in the medical sciences include the Journal of
Pathology (published on behalf of the Pathological Society)
which now ranks number one in the category of Pathology with
an Impact Factor of 6.213, and Arthritis & Rheumatism
(published on behalf of the American College of
Rheumatology) which increased its Impact Factor and remains
number one in Rheumatology. Reviews in Medical Virology now
ranks second in Virology.
Angewandte Chemie International Edition, a journal of the
German Chemical Society, increased its Impact Factor once
again. Now at 9.596, the journal is positioned significantly
higher than comparable publications.
In the area of physical sciences, Mass Spectrometry Reviews
ranks number one in the Spectroscopy category for the
seventh consecutive year; Medicinal Research Reviews leads
the Medicinal Chemistry category for the third straight
year; and Advanced Synthesis & Catalysis retains its number
one position in the Applied Chemistry category.
In all, 46 Wiley journals were ranked in the top ten of
their respective subject areas. In addition to those noted
above, these journals include Ultrasound in Obstetrics and
Gynaecology, (published on behalf of ISUOG), Annals of
Neurology, Hepatology, Liver Transplantation, Rapid
Communications in Mass Spectrometry, Proteomics,
ChemBioChem, Advanced Materials, Journal of Polymer Science
Part A: Polymer Chemistry, Journal of Experimental Zoology
Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, Evolutionary
Anthropology, The Anatomical Record Part A, Behavioral
Sciences and the Law, Journal of Organizational Behavior,
Strategic Management Journal, and Human Resource Management.
Several journals gained their first Impact Factor including:
Dyslexia, Wind Energy and Pharmaceutical Statistics
(published on behalf of PSI).
The journal Small, the first interdisciplinary journal of
nano and micro science and technology, is also showing
tremendous strength after only one year of publication.
Launched in 2005, Small is already listed in five categories
and has received an Immediacy Index of 1.255, ranking it
number two in the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology category.
The International Journal of Methods in Psychiatric Research
– new to Wiley with the acquisition of Whurr Publishers Ltd.
in 2005 – witnessed a significant increase in its Impact
Factor to 3.550 and is now ranked in the top ten of
Psychiatry journals.
