Copyright and legal deposit in a changing environment
Following last year's successful seminar on this subject at the British
Library, this is another opportunity to brief yourself on the ever-changing
world of copyright and legal deposit, this time in the surroundings of the
National Library of Scotland. Expert speakers will examine the theoretical
and practical aspects of recent legislation and agreements, and there will
be opportunities to discuss practical solutions to the challenges faced.
There will be an optional tour of the NLS to round off the day.

10.30 Understanding copyright: the theory
Andrew Braid, Licensing and Copyright Compliance Manager, The
British Library
UK copyright law continues to develop, and this session will cover the
current legislative position, reviewing the impact of the 2003 legislation
and the European Directive.
Implications for librarians and others, and possible future developments,
will be examined.
11.15 The practicalities of copyright
Helen Bartlett, HERON Copyright Manager, Ingenta
This interactive session will give delegates the opportunity to review and
discuss examples, issues and problems relating to copyright practice,
including latest developments related to digitisation in higher education
for example, so that they can take away practical solutions
and address issues with greater confidence.

Martin Graham, Legal Deposit and Modern Collections Manager,
National Library of Scotland
Information will be provided on legal deposit, with special emphasis on
progress in the
deposit of non-print, including electronic, materials. The UK position, and
the role of the
British Library, will be fully covered, as well as the particular position
of the National Library
of Scotland.
14.00 Preparing for the future – a publisher's perspective

As plans for the implementation of electronic legal deposit in the UK
continue to develop,
this speaker, intimately involved in the process, will outline the
up-to-the-minute position.
14.30 Deposit practice for electronic journals
Johan Stapel, Head – e-Depot, National Library of The
Netherlands
The National Library of The Netherlands – Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) – is
a world leader
in electronic journal deposit. This speaker will outline their latest
position and plans for the
future, including practical problems and solutions.
