It is true that your portfolio should concentrate on your experience
gained in a professional post.You have a very limited word count in
your supporting statement. But to allude to things you did before is
valid as long as you don't dwell on them. As someone suggested, you
have got your "extended" CV to make full use of without eating into
your word count and you could briefly refer to something from a
non-professional post in your statement if it led to something that
came later in your professional development, but otherwise restrict
things like this to your CV.
