This month's Online Discussion Forum topic will focus
on mentorship in libraries and its impact as a
professional development tool for both new and
experienced librarians.
Mentorship is a professional relationship between an
experienced employee and a beginner. Mentorship
encourages new talent, offers opportunities to share
expertise and seek support, and oftentimes provides
upward mobility. Mentorship is often distinguished
between training (the development of skills) and
coaching/guiding (the improvement of existing skills).
Ultimately, mentorship is focused on the path ahead,
outlining future objectives and working towards
meeting those goals.
Mentorship in libraries can take many forms--from job
shadowing and peer-pairings to formal
mentoring/residency programs and organizational
memberships.
The LIScareer website provides a bibliography on
mentoring and is a good starting place for learning
more about mentors and mentoring. The bibliography can
be accessed at http://liscareer.com/mentoring.htm .
Discussion is encouraged from both new and experienced
librarians. To better facilitate discussion, separate
topic threads will be used. Some topics to be
discussed include:
* Identifying mentorship opportunities
* Mentor/Mentee roles & qualities
* Mentoring/residency programs
* Mentor organizations/committees
* Mentoring for library leadership
* Getting the most out of mentoring experiences
I look forward to a rich discussion! Enjoy!
