Subject: Invitation for FOLIO e-learning Registration: Breaking out of
the Box (BREAKOUT)
FOLIO e-learning course: Breaking out of the Box: Extending the health
LIS professional role- skills and strategies (BREAKOUT)
a.. Are you a UK librarian working in a library or information unit
(academic, charities, NHS, professional association etcetera) that
supports NHS staff?
b.. Are you interested in learning how to equip yourself for a future
extended role?
c.. Would you like to participate in an e-learning approach to
training - the fourth course in the second series of the successful
FOLIO Programme, sponsored by the National Library for Health Librarian
Development Programme?
If your answer to the above is "Yes" then you are invited to register on
the FOLIO Breaking out of the Box: Extending the health LIS professional
role- skills and strategies (BREAKOUT) training course to run from
Monday 30th October 2006 until Friday 8th December 2006.
Breaking out of the Box: Extending the health LIS professional role-
skills and strategies (BREAKOUT)
Far too frequently health information continuing professional
development focuses simply on the technical skills required to meet the
demands of your current job or to face future challenges. This
innovative course, BREAKOUT, looks at how to equip yourself personally
and professionally for breaking out of your "comfort zone" and adopting
new roles. It also looks at strategies that offer opportunities to gain
a "taste" for new roles before entering into them. Such new roles may be
within your existing organisation or in a new organisation, they may be
library-centric or within the wider organisational environment. The
BREAKOUT course will rely heavily on the experience, published and
anecdotal, of UK health librarians who have broken out into new roles.
Aim: This course aims to equip information professionals with the
confidence and knowledge required to meet the challenges offered by new
and extended roles in healthcare information with an emphasis on the
acquisition of personal skills and strategies
Objectives/ Learning outcomes: By the end of this course participants
will be able to:
. Assess their own suitability for a variety of extended health
LIS
roles.
. Identify the importance of self-efficacy as a key strategy when
facing new and unfamiliar challenges.
. Describe the main stages of development to be undergone in
pursuit
of an extended role within health librarianship.
. Develop personal strategies to enable them to acquire other
organisational roles outside health LIS that nevertheless build on the
information skills base.
. Rehearse appropriate training and development methods that may
be
used to effect a transition to new roles.
. Engage with fellow participants in discussing issues connected
with
personal and professional development.
Following our successful experience in the past we are again using
SELF-REGISTRATION for this course. Please follow closely the
instructions given below. [Please note that places are ONLY AVAILABLE TO
UK LIBRARY STAFF WORKING IN A LIBRARY OR INFORMATION UNIT (ACADEMIC,
CHARITIES, NHS, PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION ETCETERA) THAT SUPPORTS NHS
STAFF. If you are not eligible and try to join the list your email
address will be removed prior to commencement of the course and the
place offered to an eligible applicant]. There are fifty places
available and these will be allocated on a 'first come, first served'
basis. Please do not reply to this message or try to use any other email
addresses to register.
How to join the FOLIO Course: Breaking out of the Box: Extending the
health LIS professional role- skills and strategies (BREAKOUT)
There are three ways to join the Breaking out of the Box: Extending the
health LIS professional role- skills and strategies (BREAKOUT) course.
They are all managed through the FOLIO Jiscmail list:
Method 1: Via the FOLIO List Homepage
(http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/folio.html)
From the list homepage http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/folio.html follow
the third bulletpoint link "Join or leave the list (or change
settings)". Fill in your email address, name, and click on the 'Join...'
button. Leave all other settings on the default settings.
Method 2: Via Email
Send the command: SUBSCRIBE folio <forename surname> To either:
[log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask]
Subject: The subject is ignored by LISTSERV, so can be left blank.
Message: Ideally, all that should be present in the Message body is
the
command SUBSCRIBE folio <forename surname>.
Note: Your email address is automatically taken from your email, as is
your name if present.
Example: SUBSCRIBE folio Joe Bloggs
This is the standard subscription, in this case subscribing to the
Breaking out of the Box: Extending the health LIS professional role-
skills and strategies (BREAKOUT) course (on the FOLIO discussion list)
with the
name "Joe Bloggs".
Method 3: Via the Jiscmail Subscriber's Corner facility Subscriber's
Corner is a powerful tool for managing your subscriptions.
Though detailed to use at first but, once you get used to it, is much
more flexible than other methods.
From http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk select "Subscriber's Corner" from the
QUICK
LINKS listing on the left-hand side.
When you are in Subscriber's Corner - On the left-hand navigation bar,
type in "folio" in the 'Narrow selection' field. Change 'Show' to "All
lists" and then click on Submit.
You should then see a table containing the "folio" list. Tick the box to
the left of folio, at the bottom of the table change the drop down
listbox to "Subscribe" and click on 'Submit changes'. [DO NOT select the
e-FOLIO list which is for another course entirely].
NOTE: Once you have submitted your request to join via any of these
three methods you will have registered a provisional booking for the
course. Your booking will be confirmed by email during the week
beginning Monday 23rd October 2006. Please only join if you are
seriously considering undertaking the course. If your circumstances
change in the meantime please unsubscribe at your earliest opportunity
to free up a place for another librarian. We shall maintain a "waiting
list" for all applications received after the first 50 places.

Additional Information about FOLIO
What is FOLIO?
a.. FOLIO is a programme of online learning for health librarians.
FOLIO forms part of the NLH Librarian Development Programme which was
established to provide support for librarians moving into new roles,
focusing on the development of skills in health informatics and
knowledge management, especially related to digital libraries.
b.. For an overview of the FOLIO programme, see the 'FOLIO:
Off-the-shelf learning for librarians' presentation [Delivered on June
3rd 2004 at the 'Supporting Online Learning 2: Embedding and Linking'
seminar, run by the Northwest Multimedia and Information Technology
Group], available at:
http://www.nelh.nhs.uk/folio/folio_presentation.pps
Why online learning?
a.. FOLIO was set up because librarians often find it difficult to get
away from the workplace to attend training, whether because of staff
shortages, limited budgets, travel time or other difficulties.
Who is involved?
a.. FOLIO is delivered by a team based at ScHARR, University of
Sheffield.
It is commissioned by the National Library for Health.
b.. The FOLIO Curriculum Group determines the syllabus. The group
includes representatives from the CILIP Health Libraries Group and the
LKDN Workforce Development Group; an e-learning expert; a graduate of
the FOLIO pilot; as well as suppliers and commissioners. The group is
informed by training needs analyses and by wide consultation on training
needs.
How long will the course take to complete?
Assessment is by a portfolio compiled over the duration of the course.
For the production of a good portfolio, students should spend about 2-4
hours per week on the tasks and exercises.
How much does the course cost?
Costs for the UK-version of the course are met by the NLH Librarian
Development Programme. The course is therefore free at the point of
delivery.
What if I have to miss a few days due to holidays or work commitments?
It is possible to "catch up" within a two-week extension automatically
offered at the end of the course. Please note that this particular
course attempts to minimise commitments around the time of Bank
Holidays.
What if I work part-time?
Previous participants have found it possible to complete FOLIO courses
even when working on a part-time basis. Part-time participants will
particularly benefit from the two-week extension offered at the end of
each course.
Can I join part-way through the course?
Unfortunately due to issues concerning group dynamics, together with
administrative arrangements, it is only possible to participate if you
have pre-registered for the course. However we naturally hope that the
course will be so successful that it will be repeated on a later
occasion!
