Linda's comments about the need for a co-ordinated strategy are very sensible in the light of the current investigations into electronic access journals by teams from GM libraries and Cheshire & Mersey.

Subject: Re: JAMA subscriptions for next year
Hi Ingrid
Until we know whether or not this is going to be an ongoing
subscription, it is a decision that most people will not be able to
make. No-one wants their runs with odd years missing. The whole strategy
of e journals needs looking at both regionally and nationally. On the
one hand we cannot justify wasting NHS money on providing something
twice and on the other hand if we cancel a journal that was only
provided for one year, I for one wouldn't be able to take out a new
subscription in the present financial climate which makes me very
hesitant of cancelling anything.
We need a co-ordinated strategy of taking out subscriptions to run over
several years, which probably isn't financially viable, or at the very
least of having a commitment to do so.
Regards,
Linda

Subject: JAMA subscriptions for next year
Hi everyone
I know that I haven;t even got this year's online JAMA subscription up
and running yet, but I thought that I should assess the number of print
subscriptions to JAMA in the region.
Our JAMA online price for 07 / 08 *will* take into consideration print
cancellation (unlike our Blackwell's deal which doesn;t) so it would be
good to know who, if anyone, is thinking of cancelling their print JAMA
next year. I could then go to the AMA and get a quote based on our
estimated regional print cancellation and I can tell you if HCLU are
likely to be able to afford JAMA online again next year!
As for this year's subscription - I'm still waiting for the go-ahead
from Athens as the AMA were meant to send them their up to date list of
subcribing organisations, which it deosn't look like they've done yet.
All I can do is apologise for this delay. I have asked Claire Terry from
Swets to pass on my comments and complaints to the AMA regarding this
matter.
NB Because of this delay our online JAMA subscription will run from June
06 (presuming they sort this out soon!) until the end of May 07. Many
thanks to Donna Schofield for her contribution to this email.
Best wishes
Ingrid
