Hi, All
I have a couple of JRE related questions in connection with SL3/4 and
glite MW.
1. How come there's sun jre package in SLC4 repository? Isn't there some
legal issue behind distributing jre in such way? And why is it so old (I
mean update release: 6 vs 12 on the sun's webpage)?
2. Has anybody tested perfomance of different VMs with gLite? I mean, in
the official documentation I see:
"You should absolutely install the J2SDK 1.4.2 rpm package (if you do
not install it in RPM format you'll not be able to install the
middleware), on the sun java web page follow the link RPM in a self
extracting file.",
but imho this is way too strange. JRocket or Sun 1.5 perform much better
as a server VM and I would rather use one of them for running
tomcat/dcache. And taking into consideration how much memory consumes
srmcp/apel/... it would be really nice to try different JRE for the cli
tools. The question is of course has anyone tried that already? Are
there any caveats?
cheers,
Ilja
PS. A nice page with tests of different VMs: http://www.shudo.net/jit/perf/.
