Yo,
That last mail should have had a different subject, but some
autocompletion "wizard" took care of filling it in for me and I didn't
check.
The subject should have been "NIKHEF RB Back Online".
The mysql database backing the lbserver was completely corrupted,
possible causes are:
1) a downgrade from mysql 4.1.1 to 4.0.x (I don't remember the reason,
but some piece of middleware was not compatible with the higher
version). there were warning messages in the log files about possible
corruption if one did this.
2) tables growing too big (DB sizes on disk passing 4.0 GB). I suppose
that is GiB (gigbibytes) not GB.
3) corruption due to my efforts to resuscitate the lbserver by deleting
some records.
I call your attention to the following, which I came across when
googling for methods to compactify the LB database:
http://server11.infn.it/archive-egee-jra1-itcz/1142.html
>> MySQL DB is very large (attach)

Apparently this is a well-kept secret -- that you need to do this
regularly. I googled for further references to this recommendation and
could not find them. So somehow this recommendation is not making it to
the "general public".
