Richard
PhD Studentship.
Behaviour Disorder and Family Adjustment in Cri du Chat, Cornelia de
Lange, and Angelman syndromes
School of Psychology, University of Wales, Bangor.
Closing date 30/08/2006
A three-year PhD studentship is available from October 2006 for the
study of behaviour disorder and family adjustment in Cri du Chat,
Cornelia de Lange, and Angelman syndromes. Each of these syndromes is
caused by a genetic abnormality with wide ranging effects on behaviour
and cognitive functioning against a background of intellectual
disability. The National Lottery, through the Big Lottery Fund, has
funded the project, which involves collaboration between Birmingham
(Professor Chris Oliver), Bangor (Professor Richard Hastings), and the
Institute of Psychiatry in London (Professor Pat Howlin).
The successful applicant would join the Intellectual and Developmental
Disabilities Research Group in Bangor, which currently comprises nine
PhD students and research staff studying family adjustment and
behaviour and mental health aspects of intellectual and developmental
disabilities. The student would also be a part of the larger research
project team; working with other PhD students and research assistants
in Birmingham and London, and in collaboration with the parent-led
support groups associated with each of the three syndromes. The
Bangor-based PhD student will focus primarily on the family adjustment
aspects of the research project and will be supervised by Professor
Hastings.
The School of Psychology at the University of Wales, Bangor is one of
the leading academic departments in UK Psychology. In the last national
university Research Assessment Exercise, the School received the
highest possible award (5*A, where A indicates that the work of more
than 95% of staff has been reviewed). Training and supervision will
take place at the School of Psychology in Bangor while data collection
may take place throughout the UK.
The studentship is for three years from October 2006, and is a funded
as a part of a research grant awarded by the Big Lottery Fund. All
applicants must have a first or upper second class honours degree in
Psychology or equivalent. Ideally, applicants will have completed a
recognised postgraduate research training programme, or can demonstrate
that the level of training already undertaken is in line with the
requirements set out by the ESRC. In the absence of previous training,
candidates should still apply and suitable training would be discussed
on offering the studentship. Applicants will also be required to meet
ESRC residential eligibility requirements as the funding includes the
registration fees for home/EU students only. (For further information,
see ESRC Postgraduate Studentships in the Social Sciences Available in
2006: Guidance Notes for Applicants, available from:
www.esrcsocietytoday.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/opportunities/postgraduate/
fundingopportunities/)
The studentship includes fees and a stipend of £12,300 in the first
year in line with ESRC stipend levels. Applicants are invited to make
contact with Dr Susie Nash ([log in to unmask], tel 01248 388798) to
obtain further details about the study. Further details about the study
can also be downloaded from

Applicants for this studentship should submit a detailed current CV,
covering letter indicating reasons for applying for the studentship,
and the names and contact details of two academic referees by Wednesday
30 August 2006 to Dr Susie Nash, School of Psychology, University of
Wales, Bangor, Gwynedd, LL57 2AS, UK (email applicants are welcomed to

Interviews will be held on Friday 8 September 2006, and the appointment
