Subject: Important Information for our Members
June 7, 2006
Dear Friends:
The membership of AAMR has voted and they have opted 1) to change the name of the organization and 2) to adopt the name, the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. This is a positive step and we should all feel very good about what it portends for the future. I want to thank all of you who have participated in the conversations about the name change over the past year and for the respectful and thoughtful way in which the debate has been carried out.
The issue of the name has taken valuable time, and has affected our ability to attract a new generation of members. This organization has so much to contribute and this change will make it easier for people to see beyond what we call ourselves to who we are.
The formal change will take about six months given all the official paperwork changes that will be necessary including securing changes in our 501 C-3 certification, Post Office mailing permits, and so forth. Look for an unveiling in January 2007.
In the meantime, please spread the word to colleagues and friends and urge them to join our reenergized community. Also please spread the word to our friends in the self advocacy community for whom the name was an increasing bone of contention. As part of our resolve coming out of the 2005 Summit in Washington, we told our partners in that historic meeting that we would work to change our name. We have made good on that commitment.
Since this is my last month as President, I also want to thank you all for the extraordinary privilege of leading this organization. Though I have been a member for more years than I care to remember, this job has given me the opportunity to get to know many of more of you and to develop an even deeper appreciation of the contributions that you make individually and collectively.
With deep appreciation,
Valerie Bradley
